Belize Dive Certification
Are you psyched about receiving your dive training? Looking for a place to start? Have you seen movies with divers, or have friends who rave about life underwater and the incredible feeling of being weightless and suspended, almost as if floating through the air? At Hatchet Caye Resort, we take great pride in making divers out of those who wish they could!
The process of becoming PADI-certified is quite simple. It starts with the theory. We provide the manuals and classroom training to you, and then we give a short written test to ensure that you’re familiar with the basics. After the test we’ll go over anything that’s unclear. The theory is designed to help you develop an understanding of principles like how pressure affects your body, how to choose the best scuba gear and what to consider when planning dives.
After you have the theory down, it’s time to get in the water. We fit you up with gear and your instructor takes you into the pool to learn basic techniques – everything from setting up your scuba equipment or getting water out of your mask while underwater to emergency skills like sharing air or replacing your mask.
After your confined water dive, you and your dive master will take a short boat ride to the Southern Barrier Reef for a half day dive. This is where you fully experience the underwater adventure – at the beginner level, of course. Beginning divers don’t go beyond 18 metres, or 60 feet. However, some of the most popular diving is done right at 40 feet, where the water is warmer and the colors are brighter.
The entire process of certification can take between three to four days, depending on your level of comfort and confidence. Our instructors take their time with you, to ensure that you’re confident enough with the basics to venture out on a real dive. At Hatchet Caye, our certifications take less time than at other places in Belize because of our proximity to the reef, which reduces time spent traveling to our dive sites and allows for much more time in the water honing your skills. After your certification is complete, you receive a dive card that allows you to dive anywhere in the world, purchase dive gear, and take more advanced dive courses.
